What skills or lessons have you learned recently?

They say that you must learn new skills
To help your ageing brain.
It opens up new pathways
And keeps your brain alive.
I’ve dabbled with new languages
My wife wants me to dance
But so far most relaxing
Is drawing; here’s a face.
It’s something I have never learned
At school it was not taught.
They’d simply give us paper, paint
And leave us to our selves.
But now I’m watching YouTube
The odd tutorial.
I find it very difficult
But satisfying too.
I’ve learned you draw
Just what you see not what you think is there.
You have to capture light and shade
To bring a face alive.
Faces aren’t the easiest
I can’t do eyes or nose
Never can make mouths look right
And can’t at all do teeth.
But it’s a skill I’d like to own
It simply fascinates me.
I like to watch how artists work
The subtleties they see.
Liked your poem and your desire to learn how to draw!
I can help you with this desire that you have!!!
The first and best solution is for your to go to Amazon and order the paperback of
“Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” By Betty Edwards. Outside of the Bible this book is the most dynamic book on bringing about an believably swift change in your life from someone who doesn’t really draw well to someone who’s work can be mistaken as done by a commercial artist in as little as 8 weeks!!
Do NOT skip the exercise of drawing a self portrait even if it may look like a stick figure. I didn’t and forever regret it!! Why, because you learn how to see and then draw like a pro you never have that PROOF to show how bad you were before you learned from Betty in her book!! If you are serious about wanting to learn to draw – get this book!! She shows portrait drawings of some students made at the start of her 8 week class and then those made at the end of class. It’s beyond amazing!! You are my good deed for the day! LOL Buy the book and use it.

Hi thanks for that! I’ve heard of the book, someone even offered to lend it to us. Will definitely take a look.

I would say, that even the offer of someone to lend the book to you, You are better off to own your own book because after you read it and learn to draw like you have dreamed of you will not want to part with or be without the book!!
You will be amazed at the skill you have when you learn how “TO SEE”!!

Congrats! I think you will love it. Follow the exercises – especially the self portrait before starting the drawing lessons. Then you will have before and after examples that shows how you progressed. Hope you enjoy the book. I loved doing the line drawings upside down!!
