Fan Friction

I’d never heard of fanfic till I started writing on Wattpad now I’ve realised with a start I’m practically writing the stuff.

My new Wattpad book Light and Bitter is my failed attempt to write like best selling poet Rupi Kaur. I say failed because our styles are totally different.

Rupi made her name on Instagram. Her work is invariably short, often striking but to my mind not really Poetry. I’m intrigued more than a fan.

Sometimes Light and Bitter tries to imitate from a different perspective. Other times it will expand on a suggested theme or question what has been written.

Is this fan fiction? Perhaps I’ve invented a new genre Fan Friction?

Limerence (Limerick)

I learned a new word called ‘limerence’

And used it while under the influence

It’s time I confessed

Though I’m usually obsessed

I failed to treat it with reverence.

Limerence

Gosh new one on me – word of the day limerance

Today’s Ragtag Daily Prompt:  Limerence.

New words come into English all the time. Often they’re borrowed (stolen?) from other languages, words such as tsunami, boomerang and graupel. Sometimes they’re made up, like “limerence.” This word crossed my mind out of nowhere a couple of days ago, and I thought it might be fun (even if the word came and more-or-less went before your time). 🙂

she was a rose

in the hands

of those

who had no

intention

of keeping her

but who keeps

a rose

they fade

and lose their

petals

roses aren’t for keeping

they’re best admired

unpicked

they keep their bloom

admire, inhale

treat gently and move on

treat roses cautiously

they are apt to prick

to pierce your skin

and make you bleed.

From light and bitter on Wattpad.

Elegant for an elephant

You’re elegant for an elephant

Surprisingly refined

Graceful, smart, distinguished

Surprising for your kind.

I’ve seldom seen an elephant

As dignified as you

Cultivated, fashionable

Loveliest in the zoo.

You would not think a creature

As big and large as you

Could be so very stylish

And cut it like you do.

Father

From Light and Bitter on Wattpad

i could never get things right

a constant disappointment

but now i’m turning into you

afraid of your voice

i learned not to speak

you were quiet too

the silence more wounding than words

a man’s silence is different

from a woman’s

it speaks of feelings

he dare not broach

we can bleed

but must not cry

what was it

you never said

to me and why?

Worn to a frazzle

I’m worn to a frazzle

Completely burned out

Immobile, exhausted

And can’t get about.

Im flopped on my pillow

I’m too tired to move

Can you guess what exhausts me?

You should do, it’s you!

From the time you wake up

Till the time you go down

I’m so ruddy busy

I find the day’s flown.

Immobile, exhausted

Run out of fuel

And the reason my darling

Yes the reason is you.

My Dylan moment?

Not quite Dylan going electrical but andrewagreen goes Rupi Kaur could have the same effect on my somewhat more limited following. I’ve billed it a spectacular failure to write like the Instagram sensation as I’m more of a diddly dee silly rhyme merchant while she does lots of blank space and not much ink.

The danger is I’ll annoy Rupi fans, as I’m sometimes less than reverential, and lose a few of my own who’ve never heard of her and wouldn’t like her stuff if they had. The trouble is, since Carol Ann Duffy saw me off for the Laureate job I’m getting desperate.

The good news if you follow Andrew Green’s Poems is it’s pretty much business as usual on here. My new venture Light and Bitter, a spectacular and increasingly impatient attempt to write like Rupi Kaur is appearing on Wattpad.com, my offering for the 2018 Watty awards.
