Summer Of Sixty Six – Part Five

Then it was France

And 2-0 again

Hunt with both goals

To help England win and

In case you’ve not noticed

They’d not let one in.

Two wins and a draw

So England are through

But the Germans are talking

Of Franz Beckenbaur.

Elsewhere some surprises

The Brazilians are out

The favourites are ousted.

We’re in with a shout.

The Italians, God Bless them

Why they’ve gone home too

1-0 North Korea

They’ll have to lie low.

A Hoax

It’s a hoax, a scam, a total fix

Surprised that you could fall for this.

The claims are false, a pack of lies

Youd walk away if you were wise.

He’s always doing stuff like this

You ought to give the guy a miss.

Don’t be fooled get taken in

Or listen to the likes of him.

He’s always on the look for fools

Gullible the ones he’ll choose.

Give me a break

For goodness sake.

It ain’t the truth.

It’s just a hoax.

Summer of Sixty Six – Part Four

06A4FE22-313C-49D4-917F-E84A8313AF6D

So it’s back to the football

Without more ado

To see what the white shirted

English will do.

Two  games from the knock outs

And much left to do

Who’ll be the heroes

To pull England through?

Next up are Mexicans

And Bobby Charlton

Holds sway.

2-0 to the English and

We’re on our way.

You’ll never believe me

But I’ll swear to this day

That his shot for the goal

Burst through our TV!

Shrinking

you learned to shrink

for a family that liked

it’s daughters invisible

my whole family

lurked invisibly

for generations

in the corners of rooms

or on barrack room bunks

silent till summoned

quiet in the land

you learned the art

of being empty

believing them

when they told you

you are nothing

we never needed to be told

we knew our place

waiting in the shadows

to fulfil our better’s needs.

or die obediently in their wars.

Remainers (Triolet)

Why did today’s word of the day remind me of Brexit? 19 million voted for Brexit and 18 million voted against.

Remainers

The people spoke and some were heard

But some were not and they’re still cross.

Some eighteen million were ignored.

The people spoke; not all were heard.

They will pretend we all concurred.

But some still say, ‘Who speaks for us?’

The people spoke and some were heard

But some were not and they’re still cross.

Some eighteen million were ignored

So forty eight per cent were cross.

The people spoke not all were heard.

For eighteen million were ignored.

And can’t accept what has occurred.

The Brexit vote divided us.

For eighteen million were ignored.

And forty eight per cent are cross.

Where is there now to place a cross

For those who ask, ‘Who speaks for us’

And grieve the referendum lost?

Where is there now to place their cross

For those who feel a sense of loss?

Remainers ask, ‘Who speaks for us?’

And plot where now place to their cross

Their question now, ‘Who speaks for us?’

Summer of Sixty Six – Part Three

So now back in England

They’re set to begin

The teams have assembled

In four groups of four.

Three games for England

If they want to progress

Uruguay, Mexico

And neighbours France.

Uruguay first up and we couldn’t wait

Not knowing the opponents

Had come to frustrate.

So the game we had waited for

Finished nil nil.

We were left disappointed

But expectant still

For a journey to glory

It was a slow start

But closer to home

Was a much bigger thrill.

Full compensation

For a boring nil nil.

I have missed out a chapter

For it’s important to know

Of an important event

As detailed below.

You won’t understand

From your wired up world

We’d not got a telly

With being abroad.

We had to accept we would not see

Programmes in English or only a few.

So to get a TV was quite a big step.

Yet events were unfolding

We just had to see

So we came up with the cash

For a rented TV.

Imagine the excitement

When we first got our telly

It was just black and white,

The picture not great

And not in a language we understood

But we’d got a telly so life was all good.

To be continued

Summer of Sixty Six – Part Two

Rheindahlen was a school bus ride

The largest base around

But we were based at Wickrath then

With German neighbours round.

Just a few flats where we lived

Canadian and English

Not much to see or much to do

But kick a ball

And wriggle through

Imaginary defenders.

We’d play on any patch of ground

Back then kids were allowed to

So leave us on our make do pitch

And move on with the story

As I shift the scene to Wembley’s green,

And coming English glory.
