Thin Pickings

There’s thin pickings for poets

Thin, thin pickings indeed.

As a way to get rich

It must be agreed

The poetry game don’t rate.

There’s thin, thin pickings for poets.

We’re all agreed on that.

Why-ever it is we do it

It won’t make our wallets fat

For getting rich or famous

The prospects just aren’t great.

It won’t put food on the table

It won’t put cash in the bank.

It’s a hard life being a poet

We’re kind of used to that.

Spare a thought for poets

Whose faces are wan and thin.

It’s a terrible thing that’s done to a man

When he catches the poetry thing.
