Ha, ha, stayin‘ alive!

What are your thoughts on the concept of living a very long life?

Well, you can tell by the way I use my blog
I’m an older man, no time to talk
Speak to me loud, keep me warm, I’ve been around
I’m fifties born
And now I’m alright, it’s okay
But maybe look the other way
Or if you can try to understand
How seven decades affect a man.

Whether you’re older or whether you’re younger
You’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Feel the body breakin’ and maybe it’s a shakin’
But you’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive
Oh, can you walk?

Well now, I get low and I get high
And if I can’t get either, I really try
Got troublesome feet need comfy shoes
I’m an older man and I just can’t lose
You know it’s alright, it’s okay
I’‘ve lived to see another day
Or ask again if you understand
How seven decades affect a man.

Whether you’re older or whether you’re younger
You’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Feel the body breakin’ and everything a shakin‘’
But we’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive (oh)
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive (oh)

Life goin’ nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah
Life goin’ nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I’m stayin’ alive

Well, you can tell by the way I use my blog
I’m an older man, no time to talk
Speak up loud and keep me warm
I’ve been kicked around since I was born
And now it’s all right, it’s okay
And you may look the other way
Perhaps by now you understand
How seven decades affect a man?

Life goin’ nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah
Life goin’ nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I’m stayin’ alive

Whether you’re older or whether you’re younger
I’m stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Feel the body breakin’ and everything a shakin’
And we’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive (hey)

Life goin’ nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah (ah, ah, ah)
Life goin’ nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I’m stayin’ alive

Life goin’ nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah (ah, ah, ah, ay)
Life goin’ nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I’m stayin’ alive

Life goin’ nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah (oh)
Life goin’ nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I’m stayin’ alive

From an original song by the Bee Gees – a band from way back then. I‘m blessed with good health and looking forward, God willing, to a good few years beyond the three score and ten I‘ve already had. Wishing each and everyone reading this an equally long and healthy ‘health span’.

You reach an age there’s no guarantees

What will your life be like in three years?

I like to think in three years time

I will be still alive.

Though you reach an age

There’s no guarantees

And I’ll be seventy five.

I hope I’ll still be living

Much as I do now

Fit and healthy for my age

But you can never know.

I worry about my memory

I struggle and forget

I’m learning new things

To stretch my brain

Fresh challenges to be met.

We’ll downsize our allotment

To make it easier there

We’ll experiment with ‘No Dig’

A different way to grow.

Perhaps help in the garden

To help with bigger shrubs?

But we hope to be out and doing things

Keep active there’s the rub.

Our grandkids will be older

They’re changing quicker than us.

Look forward to their futures

Catch up and make a fuss.

We’ll maybe do less travelling

Though that would be a shame.

Still new places I’d like to see

Places I’d go again.

The dream’s to still be running

A new age category.

First Male Veteran Seventy Five

Will be the aim for me.

But who can know the future?

What three years can bring?

We’ll just be making the most of life

Keep active while we can.

I’m proud to still be active

What are you most proud of in your life?

I’m proud to still be active

And getting on with life

And not like other folk my age

Who just complain and ache.

I’m lucky to be healthy

And grateful that I am

But have to say I work at it

And exercise a lot.

I’m actually working harder

Than when I was at work

I get outside in good fresh air.

I’m not stuck at a desk.

I’m not just staring at a screen

I’m busy growing food

Or working in the garden

My fingers in the soil.

I’m proud to know I’m fitter

Than most folk of my age

And proud of beating younger folk

When I am in a race.

I like to get out travelling

To see more of the world

I’ll have visited six continents

Before next year is out.

I won’t give in and sit at home

So much I want to do

I’m very proud of my Jetpack streak

And poems everyday.

I know I’ve had three score and ten

And that can be your lot

But will carry on as long as I can

Enjoy all life can give.

I will not surrender or pander to my age.

What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?

72 and still running.

I will not surrender

Or pander to my age.

Staying fit and active

the focus of my days.

Running’s my obsession

It gets me out of bed.

I wake with training sessions

running through my head.

I’m slower than I once was

Our muscles go with age

But try to be competitive

With others of my age.

I have a training programme

Do intervals for speed

With lots of slower easy runs

For that endurance base.

I don’t do faddy diets

But balance what I eat

We grow a ton of fruit and veg

So that is what I eat.

I try to get a good night’s sleep

And have recovery days

Training breaks our muscles down

A good rest builds them up.

The secret of a good old age

Is not to give things up.

Tell yourself you can’t do much

And lo and behold

You won’t!

Hindsight

What do you think gets better with age? – (Daily Prompt)

The thing that gets better is hindsight

It’s better looking back.

You see the things you should have done

And wish you’d done them then.

You miss what you took for granted

And thought would always last

Appreciate them better

Now they‘re in the past.

The young think age brings wisdom

But we learn by getting it wrong

They can’t learn from our mistakes

They have to make their own.

We wish we could start over

But it won’t come round again

Looking back it falls into place

You can see what you didn‘t see then.

Oh the power of hindsight

Hindsight‘s a wonderful thing

No point being wise after events

If you couldn’t be wise back then.

Talking bout my generation

What is your favorite genre of music?

Talking bout my generation

Stuff I like is kinda old

Love the Who, the Kinks, the Beatles

Best of all the Rolling Stones.

People want to put us down

Just because we’re still around

Guess we have got very old

Don’t wanna die just want to get old.

Why don’t you all fade away

Don’t be digging graves we say

I won’t be making a big sensation

Just keep taking my medication.

This is my generation

My generation baby.

Guess we ought to fade away

Cos you don’t dig what we all say

Won’t be causing big sensation

I’m just talking degeneration.

People try to put us down

Just because we can’t get round

Why is it so awful cold

Don’t want to die

Just want to get old.

My generation.

Use it or you’ll lose it

How do you practice self-care?

It’s ’use it or you’ll lose it‘

When you get to seventy two

Staying fit and active

Is what I try to do.

There’s little doubt I’m slower

But no way I’ll give in

It’s hard work plus rest

That gives results

So that’s what I’ll still do.

Exercise breaks down tissue

It builds back while you rest

Our bodies adapt to what we ask

So you have to keep pushing – do!

If you think all that’s left

Is to sit on the couch

And count down the days

Till you die.

You body adapts

And as you might guess

It’s life on the sofa for you.
