Guess that was its genesis

Guess that was its genesis

The place where the whole thing began.

You took a bite of the apple

Then things kind of got out of hand.

Back then we only had good times

We’d do pretty much as we chose

But you wanted a slice of the apple

And that was the start of our woes.

Up to then it had all been so perfect

Those good times are hard to forget

But the glorious vision of Eden

Is obscured now by tears of regret.

I dream of a day we’ll get back there

And things will be perfect again

Meanwhile there’s just toil and hardship

And all of our troubles remain.

Must you be so strident?

Must you be so strident

So forceful with your views?

Any chance you’ll hesitate?

Why so short a fuse?!!

Someone pressed your button

I find you have a few!

You’re not short of opinions

React so to the news.

Can’t you reign it in a bit

Think before you speak?

Sounding off the way you do

Will only bring you grief.

It doesn’t get your point across

Passion’s not enough

They’re not hearing what you say

Your tone has put them off.

Bravado

Sometimes bravado is foolish

It’s just not the right way to go

But casting aside all discretion

Is sometimes the only way through.

If there’s nothing much in the locker

And more to be gained than you’ll lose

Striding out with a swagger

Can be quite the best path to choose.

Act with sufficient conviction

Look like you mean what you say

It might just be foolish bravado

But perhaps you’ll still carry the day.

Obtuse (Villanelle)

Your attitude’s obtuse

Insensitive, unfeeling

I can’t take this abuse.

Complaining is no use

There’s no point me appealing

Your attitude’s obtuse.

I really must cut loose

Your answer’s quite revealing

I can’t take this abuse.

You finally cooked your goose

Blew up and hit the ceiling

Your attitude’s obtuse.

It’s just pretence a ruse

You don’t get how I’m feeling

I can’t take this abuse.

You’re ignorant, unfeeling

Frankly unappealing.

Your attitude’s obtuse

I can’t take this abuse.

Plethora of Options (Pantoum)

There’s a plethora of options

So many I could choose

Choose one for adoption

What have I got to lose?

So many I could choose

Who knows which one is best?

What have I got to lose?

Just choose one ditch the rest.

Who knows which one is best?

Who can know the answer?

Just choose one ditch the rest.

It won’t be a disaster.

Who can know the answer?

A plethora of options

It won’t be a disaster

Choose one for adoption.

Notorious (Pantoum)

The man was notorious of ill repute.

His conduct scandalous critics proclaimed.

That he got things wrong was beyond dispute

But, all things said could he really be blamed?

His conduct was scandalous critics proclaimed

He’d done things he shouldn’t we have to accept

But, all things said could he really be blamed

For all his success he had many regrets.

He’d done things he shouldn’t we have to accept.

The weight of his past would too often poke through

For all his success he had many regrets

They help to explain the things he would do.

The weight of his past would too often poke through

This man so notorious of such ill repute

Condemned for the things that he used to do

Had talents and gifts that none could dispute.

Vehement Triolet

It’s hard to be too vehement

When writing formal triolets

They can be sincere, of clear intent

But it’s hard to be too vehement.

You can be quite clear and say what’s meant

But structural rules must still be met

It’s hard to be too vehement

When writing formal triolets.

A Possibilty

Possibly, improbably

You’ll maybe fall

in love with me.

I’ll love you

And you’ll love me

Life will be sheer poetry.

Possibly, incredibly

The likes of you

Will fall for me.

I’ll clap my hands

I’ll dance with glee

If such a thing

Should ever be.

A Dalliance

It’s really just a dalliance

A casual quick affair

Shouldn’t really of happened

But I saw you standing there.

It never really meant much

A spur of the moment thing

But I think of it and the sunshine

And my heart begins to sing.

Just a casual dalliance

A meaningless affair

But my heart still jumps

When I think of you

And I wish we were still there.

FLOURISH

Conductors flourish batons

Batsmen flourish bats

You can flourish a bottle of whiskey

Do extravagant things with a hat.

I pray that you’ll flourish and prosper

Thrive and really do well

A burgeoning sense of well being

You clearly fell under a spell.
