A perfect week

Describe your ideal week.

It is the early summer

Thereโ€™s new leaves on the trees

The days are long and sunny

And everything is green.

Thereโ€™s gentle rain at night time

It falls while weโ€™re asleep.

Enough to get the ground wet

And water all our crops.

Weโ€™re both retired from work now

Our days are all our own

Weโ€™ll fill the week with good days out

And perfect times at home.

Iโ€™ll be patient in the shops

My wife will not get cross.

I will not do such stupid things

Or make such daft mistakes.

Iโ€™ll have a good week running

Five good days or more

A longish run on Sunday

Thirty miles a week.

Intervals on Tuesday

Eight by three or such

Sixty second rest breaks

Running with the club.

Saturday is ParkRun

A 5k time trial test

First male over 70

Cos Iโ€™ll be at my best.

A little time for writing

The words will simply flow

Ideas come quickly to my head

And on the page theyโ€™ll go.

Weโ€™ll do nice things together

Perhaps a lovely meal

With time for friends and family

And perhaps a drink or two.

Weโ€™ll have nice meals together

And feed of crops weโ€™ve grown

Some time on our allotment

Picking in the sun.

Weโ€™ll leave room for surprises

Pleasant ones of course

Time for conversation

And to have a laugh.

Thereโ€™s only been one Pele

Name the professional athletes you respect the most and why.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento
better known as Pele.

Thereโ€™s only been one Pele

Pele was the King

He burst on to the World Cup stage

At only seventeen.

The legendary Brazilian

Who played the game with flare

Helped Brazil to three World Cups

The first in fifty eight.

Associated with him

The famous, well used phrase

Peleโ€™s why we coined the phrase

โ€˜The Beautiful Gameโ€™.

He was ever the gentleman

Commanded huge respect

Beloved by his opponents

And those with whom he played.

He mostly played for Santos

Scored so many goals

But later New York Cosmos

There in USA.

He was a great Ambassador

A diplomat of sport

โ€˜Athlete of the Centuryโ€˜

Peleโ€™s accolade.

Sometimes I will sit and thinkโ€ฆ.

How do you relax?

Sometimes I will sit and think

At other times just sit

Relaxingโ€™s not so difficult

Just find the time to stop.

Iโ€™ll maybe find a thing to watch

Or fiddle with my phone.

Iโ€™ll listen to an audio book

Or have the radio on.

A favourite place the garden room

Iโ€™ll maybe watch the birds

Or simply watch the grass grow

And drink in all the flowers.

I listen to my body

And if Iโ€™m really tired

Iโ€™ll try to put my feet up

And have a little sleep.

At night there is no problem

Iโ€™m early to my bed

I simply lay my head down

And then Iโ€™m fast asleep.

Itโ€™s not that Iโ€™m not active

I almost always am

But finding time to sit and restโ€˜s

Important to the plan.

I do a lot of exercise

And love to work the soil

Those things can relax me too

But you canโ€™t beat sitting down.

That stupid short word โ€˜uniโ€™

Another word Iโ€™d like to ban

The stupid short word โ€˜uniโ€™

If you canโ€™t do four syllables

You donโ€™t deserve to be there.

Thereโ€™s no such thing as โ€˜uniโ€™

Itโ€™s uni-vers-it-y.

Why must you use Australian slang?

Have you even been there?

Now itโ€™s universal

The proper word has gone

Youโ€™re supposed to be intelligent

But look at what youโ€™ve done.

Letโ€™s have English words back

Forget this dreadful slang.

Letโ€™s have proper joined up words!

Iโ€™m sorry everyone.

I love to be an old git

Complain about the young

But surely itโ€™s not so very hard

To get around your tongue.

The word Iโ€™d drop is โ€˜tryโ€˜

If you had to give up one word that you use regularly, what would it be?

If I had to drop one word

The word Iโ€™d drop is โ€˜tryโ€™.

It is an ineffectual word

And hereโ€™s the reason why.

You only ever use the word

If unsure youโ€™ll succeed.

Itโ€™s commitment builds success

You ought to say, โ€˜I WILLโ€™.

Donโ€™t let others get away

With saying that theyโ€™ll try.

You have to know they really will

Or know the reasons why.

I would make one exception

And thatโ€™s to save a game.

No point playing rugby

If you canโ€™t score a try.

Cross the line- you score a try

For that you get five points

And a chance to shoot at goal

And get another two.

When you set up

to kick the points

You have to know you will.

The chances are you

Wonโ€™t succeed

if you only think

โ€˜Iโ€™ll try.โ€™

Latin? In Germany!

Are you holding a grudge? About?

Iโ€™m not sure that youโ€™d call it a grudge

But a niggle I certainly do

Itโ€™s rankled me for many a year

Though it may seem small to you.

Picture me in Germany

at an English speaking school.

Three years into secondary school

So thirteen years or so.

Iโ€™d changed schools

for the umpteenth time

Cos thatโ€™s what army kids do.

So my new school is in Germany

What do you think they do?

They wonโ€™t let me do a German class

They say itโ€™s Latin for you.

You know a bit of Latin

And we need more in that class

We wonโ€™t be teaching German to you

Though youโ€™re living in Germany.

To put the thing in context

Itโ€™s a very big army base.

Joint Headquarters, Germany

The biggest base there was.

Youโ€™d more likely meet Canadians

Or U.S on the base

Youโ€™d rarely see a German there

Afraid that was the case.

So I did fine with English

The Latin not so much

Although itโ€™s helped with word games

With learning grammar and such.

So three whole years in Germany

And I barely speak a word

Picked up a bit just here and there

But really itโ€™s absurd!

I did a bit back in England

And have dabbled a little since

But I wasted an opportunity

And it really doesnโ€™t make sense.

I know itโ€™s been a long time

I wonโ€™t be taking revenge

But is it wrong it niggles me still

And I still get cross a bit?

Itโ€™s a long way to New Zealand – a long, long way to go.

Share a story about the furthest youโ€™ve ever traveled from home.

Itโ€™s a long way to New Zealand

A long, long way to go

But we were so excited

To set off there from home.

So destination Auckland

Change planes at Dubai

At least thatโ€™s how it should have been

They changed it on the way.

The plan to cruise New Zealand,

Tasmania, on to Oz

Terrific destinations

But the flight out? Not so much.

The flight is long and arduous

Over 24 hours

You can stop over

at Dubai or Hong Kong.

But our plan

Right or wrong

Was to just change planes

And press on from Dubai.

We left Heathrow round lunchtime

A 13:40 flight

First leg on an Airbus

Seven hours to Dubai.

The Airbus is luxurious

The nicest plane they fly

Excellent in flight movies

And comfort all the way.

We reached Dubai

the early hours

Twenty to one a.m.

Theyโ€™re messing with the clocks

of course

So already itโ€™s next day.

Dubai airportโ€˜s hectic

A really scarey place.

Modern and efficient

But confusing all the same.

An hour and twenty minutes

Was all the time we had

To get our transfer sorted out

And get back on a plane.

And there was some confusion

It seemed the plane would stop

Nothing on our tickets

They said weโ€™d go straight through

But it seemed thereโ€™d be an extra stop

At Bali on the way.

We flew from Dubai airport

At two oโ€˜clock am

On our way to Auckland

Still eighteen hours away.

Not such a modern aircraft

Or so easy to relax

Your legs get cramped

You have to move

On such a long, long flight.

The flight dropped in at Bali

It sounds an exciting place

But we only saw the airport

And not too much of that.

They made us all get off the plane

Weโ€˜re really tired by now

We scarcely know what day it is

Or if itโ€™s day or night.

We line up for security

Goodness knows quite why?

Weโ€˜re all lined up

We shuffle through

Then straight back on the plane.

We do our best to get some sleep

And get our bodies right

New Zealandโ€™s thirteen hours ahead

Our messed up body clocks!

Our bodies arenโ€™t for sitting

It screws your stomach up

To sit scrunched up for

Twenty four hours

And scarcely get to move.

We hit the coast of Aussie land

But are we nearly there?

Eight hours across Australia

New Zealand further still.

We left home on Monday

13:40 Hours

Arrived In Auckland Wednesday

05:20 am

Thatโ€™s a lot of travelling

A long, long way from home.

New Zealand was just wonderful

Tasmania, Sydney too

Iโ€™d really love to go again

But what a trek to do!

Everyone should do it

At least once in their life.

I wouldnโ€™t want to put you off

But the journey needs a break.

The New Zealand fjords visited on our cruise.

If youโ€™re talking perfect homesโ€ฆ

What does your ideal home look like?

Iโ€™m happy living where I do

And wouldnโ€™t want to move

But if youโ€™re talking perfect homes

Perhaps thereโ€™d be some tweaks.

Location is important

The thing you can not change

Improve a property all you like

Butโ€™ll still be where it is.

I like to be near water

With river or coastal walks

But not at risk of flooding

So higher ground or slope.

Accessible to countryside

But close to town and shops

With equal chance of solitude

Or somewhere with some life.

Well away from flight paths

Unwelcome traffic noise

But handy for the motorways

The odd weekend away.

Not too far from family

To visit or have here

With plenty room for them to stay

For family parties here.

The house should be quite spacious

And full of light and air

But easily manageable

Quite easy to keep clean.

Iโ€™d like to have good neighbours

But prefer my house detached

With a good secluded garden

That wraps the house around.

A good mix in the garden

Of trees and blooms and shrubs

A decent lawn where kids can play

A patio for us.

I think perhaps four bedrooms

With study and exercise space

A choice of places to relax

To suit our different moods.

A decent modern kitchen

With work and storage space

And also a utility room

For washing clothes and veg.

I think a second bathroom

Will help when we have guests

And plenty off road parking

With space for visiting cars.

Iโ€™d want to have good wi fi

Decent internet speed

A good sized television

And speakers in each room.

Iโ€™d want it nicely furnished

Though please donโ€™t make me choose!

My wife would have to style it

Sheโ€™ll do it to my taste.

So that would be just perfect

But like I said at first

Iโ€™m pretty happy with what Iโ€™ve got

And wouldnโ€™t want to move.

Things that make me teary eyed

What brings a tear of joy to your eye?

Thereโ€™s things that make me happy

Thereโ€™s things that make me glad

But things that make me teary eyed

Why, mostly theyโ€™re contrived.

Usually some soppy film

Is what will make me cry

A grown man usually sensible

Feels tears come to his eye.

Itโ€™s sheer manipulation

A clever writerโ€™s trick.

Pull yourself together man.

Stop it now. Just quit.

The joy of seeing children born

A friend you found again.

Nothing makes you cry like this.

It makes so little sense.

I blog to entertain you..

Why do you blog?

I blog to entertain you

Play around with words.

I try to get a rhythm going

Might throw in a rhyme.

Blogs go down quite quickly

While Iโ€™ve got some time

They helped me get the habit back

And share some thoughts of mine.

Iโ€™m capable of better stuff

Have a stack to share

But blogging gets an audience

And feedback from out there.

Need to build some followers

So more folk take a look

Build some more subscribers here

Then maybe do a book.

I wonโ€™t find fame and fortune

Poets donโ€™t get that

But I get a kick when you take a look

At stuff what I have wrote.
